Aquamarine was considered to be sacred to Neptune, god of the sea. This
association with the sea made it the sailors’ gem, promising prosperous
and safe voyages.
The Romans believed the aquamarine possessed
medicinal and healing powers; during the Middle Ages it was believed to
be an effective antidote against poison. Aquamarines were also
thought to be the source of power for soothsayers, who called it the
“magic mirror”, and used it for telling fortunes and answering questions
about the future.
Today, aquamarine is regarded as the stone
of courage. It has calming and cleansing properties, reducing stress,
whilst energising and alleviating allergies.
Friendship Balls were traditionally made by glass blowers at the end of their shift with left
